Medical Amendment in the Works
June 22, 2015
FMCSA has plans to revise its medical qualification standards in order to allow drivers with insulin-treated diabetes to operate commercial motor vehicles without obtaining an exemption. From 1970 to 2003, there was a ban on drivers with diabetes who used insulin that prohibited them from driving a commercial vehicle in interstate commerce. In 2004, FMCSA started accepting applications for exemptions that allowed drivers with this condition to be given medical examiners certificates on a case-by-case basis every two years. FMCSA plans to publish a notice of this proposed new rule in July of 2015.
